A ROPE AND A NOBLE CAUSE

A health club can be great place to meet people and get in shape. You may find friendly rivalry and competition. Your morale can get a boost.  We also meet plenty of insecure people at gyms. Gyms are a lot like churches.

We go to Church because we know we are not in the condition we want to be in. We know we ought to be pushing or pulling on something. We also want to have fulfilling relationships. Insecure people are at church. What better place?  

At the gym some of the guys, and yes, even the gals, are comparing themselves to others. “Are his arms thicker than mine?” “Is her waist trimmer than mine?” “Who is stronger?” It’s so much like church!  

We look at the world through our individual insecurities. “Am I superior or inferior to you?” It’s silly, isn’t it!

Team sports are a way to move our eyes from “me” to “we.”   What if we engaged everyone in the gym, or in the church, in a team task to bring corporate achievement?  

How about getting everyone on a long rope – with the other end tied to a noble cause?  

Let’s pull together!

KEEPING A JOURNAL

We scanned through journal entries for 2014. How grateful and thankful we are!

At the end of most days I take 5 to 10 minutes to chronicle the day’s activities, news or thoughts. As I re-read the entries my appreciation for God’s goodness increases. When I scan a year’s worth of journaling, of watering roses, replacing wiper blades and visiting dear ones I reflect with appreciation.

Our memories are such frail things. How quickly we may forget! 2014 included little things like moving to Abilene, TX and big things like loading a shipping container with relief supplies for Africa.

By keeping a daily journal I can revisit the blessings of a good tax return, moving furniture at Camp Barkeley or prophetic words of encouragement.

Moses kept a journal. The priests and kings of Israel did the same. It was good that King Ahasuerus kept one. Esther and the Jews of Persia were saved because of it.

I encourage you to preserve the blessings of God by keeping a daily journal. You may do it on paper or on computer (backed up). It takes only a few moments each day but preserves a lifetime of perspective for you, and perhaps for your generations.

So, record the dream of the night, what was for breakfast, the answer to prayer, the surprise visitor, the grief or joy of the day. This little investment will bring big returns.

GLORY AND MARVELING

“…the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed.” (1 Thessalonians 1:10)

There will be no disappointment among the saints at the appearing of Jesus. No one will say, “The advertisements and trailers made it look great but the movie was a bust.”

Spielberg and Lucas have produced incredible stuff but nothing will compare with this wide-screen production! Only a few shepherds saw it the first time but everyone will see the panoramic sequel. You won’t miss it, wherever you stand on the planet. In fact every eye will see His glorious coming with heaven’s epic entourage! The cast will be so immense that Christ’s escorts will seem like water droplets making up an all-encompassing cloud.

There are times when we are with family and friends and there is an immediate weather report. “Hey guys! Come quick, you need to see this. We are amazed as we come to the patio and see the glorious sunrise, torrential monsoon rains, a double rainbow or baseball sized hail. We will need a new word to replace “awesome” when Christ returns.

We look forward to vacations, birthdays, graduations, weddings and births of babies. This event is the Christian’s blessed hope and eager expectation. We are, “awaiting the blessed hope, even the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13).  Whatever our age or circumstances, lovers of Jesus have something to look forward to!

Those who have stiff-armed Jesus are in for dreadful, calamitous ruin. They will hide in caves and call on the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Rev 6:16-17)

We must not be pretenders but true believers. Too many think of the Second Coming of Jesus as a doctrine rather than a young woman’s hope for the perfect wedding to the perfect man.

The crown is not for those who “believe” that Jesus is returning. It is for those who “long for” His returning. “Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (2 Tim 4:8)

Watchmen, Stand tall! Heads up! Our redemption is drawing near!

“My soul waits for the Lord

HOLY ROLLERS

When I was a lower-classmen at Center Street Elementary school a neighbor frightened me. Our walk to school took us by a little white church. He told me “holy rollers” met inside. He said they shouted and rolled on the floor, jumped on the pews and swung from chandeliers. Naturally, I was horrified. In fact, when I walked past the building I walked faster. You never know what dreadful things might happen if you linger!

I attended a church that told me that Jesus was sweet and kind but I didn’t get much more. I was part of a congregation that sadly had a pastor so deceived that he did not believe Jesus rose from the dead. I didn’t come to know the Savior in a church.

My last year in high school a friend told me that Jesus was coming back. This was both disturbing and stimulating. I began to read the New Testament. Jesus seemed to be such an attractive and powerful person! My last month in High School a man told me, if I confessed Jesus as my Lord and believed in my heart that God raised Him from the dead I would be saved. I would have eternal life! You may find this incredible promise in Roman 10:9-10. I remember no rockets in air or bombs bursting in air. I do remember a distinct peace and sense of bedrock security when I said, “Yes” to Him.

As a new believer I voraciously read the bible and began to connect with others that were riding on the Jesus movement of the early 70’s. I found fellowship with other young believers at a Christian coffee house and also in a college ministry.

I told friends that I would love to go back in time and walk with the Lord Jesus. They told me, “No, it’s better this way because Jesus has gone to heaven and has given us His Holy Spirit.” I had no personal knowledge of the Holy Spirit. True, we did have some “warm fuzzy” experiences sharing together but I would have traded them in an instant to be face to face with Jesus. Jesus might be known in the past, or in the future. I wasn’t sure about the Spirit. Then I was ambushed!

CHOIR PRACTICE

I was part of the choir and came to church, not knowing practice was canceled. I saw a light on in the fellowship area but found it vacant. I walked through the dark hall to the sanctuary’s double doors and cracked one open. There was no light except for what came from the street outside. I thought, “Maybe I should go in and pray“, at the same time I thought, “I have a lot of homework to do.” In that moment of indecision I was gripped at my chest as if an invisible hand grabbed a fistful of my shirt. I was literally pulled into the sanctuary about a dozen feet! I stood in the dark room totally astonished. I laid my left hand on a pew and then received another surprise. How do I put it into words? I felt a power like electricity or surging water going through my body. Had I not been holding the pew I might have fallen. I felt holy awe!

My greatest “spiritual experience” up to that time was a sense of joy as I sang praise songs at the local Christian coffee house. This was off the grid, out of any paradigm or speculation about spiritual things! I stood still and silent. After a few minutes I felt drawn to one of the wooden lecterns up front. I walked to it and placed my hands on either side. Again, suddenly, unexpectedly this electric-water feeling came over me, and again if I had not been holding on I might have fallen. There were no words but I felt I was beginning to perceive His voice.

Had I become… a holy roller?

TOWING AIRPLANES

Here is something for a change of pace. Do you ever swap dreams to discover mysteries? Perhaps there is a Joseph or Daniel who might like to interpret a pair of dreams I’ve had recently.

In the first dream Pam was driving a truck pulling an older twin engine plane. It was in decent condition but needed a little touch-up. I was excited about working on it. In the second dream I was driving our car with Pam and realized we were pulling a small jet plane behind us. I thought it would be wonderful to fly the plane but we would need to find a pilot or learn to fly.

It would be fun to get your thoughts. If you have a dream you’d like help understanding I’d be curious to look into the mystery with you.

“We both had dreams,” they answered, “but there is no one to interpret them.”

Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.” (Gen 40:8)

DISCOVERING TREASURE

Don’t pass by rusty tin cans. A California couple walking their dog found one, then several more near it, full of gold coins. Value? $10 Million!

Mel Fisher read Treasure Island as a child and got a serious case of gold fever! July 1st 1985, after having searched 16 years for the shipwrecked Atoshia, his team discovered its treasure worth $500 million!

Jesus told two stories of striking it rich in Matthew 13:44-46.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.  

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.”

Quite by accident the first man stumbled on treasure buried in a field. He sold everything he had – his house, lawn mower, SUV, etc. until he was able to buy the field and make the treasure legally his.

The second parable shows focused intent. A man who dealt in pearls, who knew value, found one of such exceptional worth that he liquidated all his stock, dozens, perhaps hundreds of pearls – plus his home, lawn furniture, baseball card collection, etc. in order to buy that singular pearl.

We may stumble into the reality of Jesus. We may find The Pearl on a quest. Whether by “chance” or earnest seeking, the trivial price of giving up all to receive Him is well worth The Treasure!!!

SOLEMNIZING THE DECLARATION WITH FIREWORKS!

Has the potency of our Independence been lost behind a smoke screen of fireworks?

The significance of holidays degrade by inattention. Thanksgiving becomes gluttony day. Christmas Incarnation becomes gift-giving day. Resurrection Sunday becomes eat a chocolate bunny day. Independence Day becomes picnic and fireworks day.

Independence Day originally was more than explosive light shows. It was death-defying determination to escape totalitarian rule. In a much smaller land, and missing the millions who live here today, 4,435 died because of The Declaration. They put action to the words, “appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, … And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

What if you could not buy products from Turkey, Germany or South Africa unless they first were shipped to England, and then were shipped to you with English taxes?

What if a British officer knocked on your door and informed you that ten soldiers would be staying at your home for a few months starting now?

What if you were not allowed to make the most basic laws governing the behavior of people in your state or community?  

What if the Crown taxed you more than they taxed the people in England and refused to listen to your many questions and petitions?

Would you patiently implore the understanding of England as did the colonies? Would you petition and implore? Would you, like the the colonist eventually say,  “Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God” and “Don’t tread on me!”

A question for us moderns is, “Would you and I have signed the document?”

Would we have laid down our lives, our bank accounts and reputations to back up our signatures?

Our behaviors as everyday patriots will show us what we would have done had we been planted in those pivotal days of history. Perhaps our days are no less momentous. 

It’s been said that “To maintain our nation’s freedom it will take the same kind of resolve that it took to form it.” Let’s be grateful for the intelligence, wisdom and determination that those before us acted on to gain us freedom. Let us somberly remember our children and grandchildren, and refresh our resolve as we celebrate our costly freedom.

John Adams wrote regarding the Declaration.

“The Second Day of July 1776, [the day Adams thought the signing and commemoration would both be on] will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival.

It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with-

Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.

You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States.

Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.”

Please do solemnize the day by setting off fireworks, clanging the kitchen pots and honking your car horn, but don’t fail to tell your children the reason for doing so!

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: A NOVEL THOUGHT

A good author will make his characters three dimensional, thoughtful, emotional and active. She or he will give them virtues, vices and mannerisms. The author will give them predictable patterns and yet not paint the character so completely that there is no room for surprises. The character may act, “out of character.” Characters interest us in their predictable patterns but hook us when they act, “uncharacteristically. “ 

The author may present an unlikely hero. The shy, bumbler saves the day almost by accident! The hardened criminal is softened by the plight of an innocent child, and somehow both the criminal and child are rescued! The timid, wallflower gets her moxie when she’s had enough of the villain. Flattened bad guy!

God writes stories with unlikely champions. Gideon cowering in the winepress is galvanized to lead his clans against the teaming minions! Jael, your everyday Bedouin wife, drives a tent steak through the scoundrel’s sleeping head. I can picture the boys coming home and saying, “Wow, Mom! You are amazing!” 

The Great Author had the role for the Lead written before the foundations of the earth. Jesus rides the white horse at the head of the army! But following Him are many supporting actors. By His amazing grace we are among them! Pretty amazing to think that God had a script in mind for each of us!

In every story the character at the end is not the same person we met at the beginning. When God’s grand magnum opus is completed I wonder what you and I will look like! 

“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.” (1 John 3:2-3)

AN ELECTIVE COURSE

In my dream I was going to college. I knew I did not have a heavy class load. I told a classmate it was nice to be in a place where I could take elective classes. I said I would like to take a class that studied the limits of human imagination.

We human beings are “fearfully and wonderfully made!” I am often astonished at the creativity and innovations that we, the children of dust, are capable of. How does that wiz kid get all those answers? Where did that inventive idea come from? Where did that creativity for solving that enigma descend from? 

Being created in the image of God puts us ahead of rocks and trees and things. What potential God instilled in us! Do you think he ever takes delight in our pushing the limits of human imagination? I do!

God can do over and above our most fantastic imaginations! We know this from passages like Ephesians 3:20-21.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more

than all we ask or imagine,

according to his power that is at work within us,

to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus

throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

God can more than trump any of our amazing constructs with His creative genius.

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived

what God has prepared for those who love him”-

but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.”  1 Corinthians 2:9-10.

What limits do you suppose our Lord has put on your imagination? What happens when He allows us to tap into His?

The shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land is a relief.  Peter’s shadow brought cures to people. Several times the Psalmists wrote of finding refuge in the shadow of God’s wings. Shadows alert us to people or things coming our way.

We don’t typically strive to find shadows. Children may create them while playing with a flashlight in a dark room but playing with shadows interests us only a short time. Shadows in scripture often portray the brevity of life and the end of the road, ”The shadow of death.”

I would rather have a hamburger than its shadow. I would rather kiss my true love than her shadow. Are you hunting shadows or The Shadow Maker? 

Scripture exhorts us to remember the mighty works of the Lord. Don’t forget those times when the consequence of the presence of God was frogs galore, a divided sea, provision in the wilderness and victory in battle. The reason for remembering these things is that we would then recall The Great God Himself and turn to face Him!

When we celebrate Passover, tabernacles or participate in baptism and communion we are dealing with shadows. We appreciate these things but then turn to find out What/Who is casting the shadow. 

“Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink,

or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.

These are a shadow of the things that were to come;

the reality, however, is found in Christ.”  Col 2:16-18

Colossians 2:16-18  Tells us Christ is reality not shadow. 

Hebrews 8:3-6  Tells us Jesus is superior to the shadow of the tabernacle.

Hebrews 10:1-7  Tells us Christ did not come as a shadow but with a tangible body that creates them. 

There is a place for rules and practices, traditions and customs but let us not get caught in the shadows. Let us rather turn to face The Shadow Maker!

“He reveals the deep things of darkness

and brings deep shadows into the light.”  Job 12:22
