A MAN WITH A MAID

“There are three things which are too wonderful for me,

Yes, four which I do not understand:

The way of an eagle in the air;

The way of a serpent upon a rock;

The way of a ship in the midst of the sea;

And the way of a man with a maid.” (Prov30:18-19)

35 years ago we were on a honeymoon to the Oregon coast. The picture is grainy but the memories are sweet!

I married the bright, vivacious, generous, fun-loving, can-do Pam Grogan, my lover, my friend, my counselor, my prod, my perspective glass. She has challenged me, believed in me, exhorted me and been faithful to her vows.

Pam has been the single, most remarkable person I have known. So decisive, determined, devoted! She has generously given me four stellar children whom she has raised to be people of excellence.

The proverb says, “Behind ever great man there is a woman.” Sometimes she is rolling her eyes! No pretense to greatness; I certainly did marry out of my league in terms of passion for Jesus, resolve to seek Him out and keep the fires stoked!

With Pam it is easy to say, “Many women have done noble things, but you excel them all!” (Prov 31:29)

“Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her works praise her in the gates!” (Prov 31:31)

POINTING OUT THE RAINBOW

Hey guys, come out right now! Hurry you need to see this! This is amazing!

We are urged, and so we come. We step onto the porch or back patio, we pull back the drapes or stand looking out the open garage door – and we see it –

The Vivid Sunset

The Heat Lightening

The Thundering Hail

The Picturesque Clouds

The Pelting Rain

The Ice Designs on the Trees

We might have missed it if the messenger had not called.

Signs and wonders are around us but too few heralds to call us to attention. I am grateful for those who see Wonders and point them out to me!

THE GIFT OF FAITH FOR CHRISTMAS!

I rarely have a Christmas letter out on time. Haven’t even tried for a few years. But on our way home from a visit to family I had an experience with God. Of all places it was IHOP! (International House of Pancakes) :~)

Our waitress was young and embarrassed. The restaurant  had run out of the breakfast items we requested from the menu. Not once but twice she came back to our table saying, “I’m sorry we are out of…!”   Surprisingly, no chicken in the place or whole grain pancakes either!

Steve and I looked again (#3) at the menu and made our choices. We bantered about a restaurant that doesn’t keep enough on hand to handle flux in the patrons. We were up-beat and not dissuaded. As encouragers we let the young lady know we were not upset but we would be satisfied.

Then I began to hear something else… “I will not be denied!” Whether Hannah at the tabernacle threshold, Esther in the outer court awaiting a summons, or Mary, looking at her promise on the cross, would these women be denied? They had staked everything on their hearts desire.

I believe God is offering “Good Cheer” at this time. As many are walking through this worlds tribulations…”be of Good Cheer I have overcome the world.”  (John 16:33)

Perhaps you have been comfortable with your place, your relationships and how things are going with God, when an unusual event takes place. What now? This is awkward, uncomfortable, shocking, a crisis, you name it. You were not expecting it! Will you let it go, or will you persist and press in to ask, “What are you saying God?”

I also felt it’s time to ask for a big gift from our Daddy God for Christmas, something that will upgrade the whole ‘gifts of the Spirit’ package. (I Corinthians 12 -14)

Ask for the gift of Faith for Christmas! We will appreciate what that gift does to all the others and our personal relationship with the Godhead.  To access ALL the gifts Faith is a key. He’s looking for Sons and Daughters to be full of faith. So ask and expect, I think you’ll hear answers to your deepest longings – some which you have dropped long ago.  It may cost you. It cost each of the mentioned women to go against the grain, the religious world, their families and cultural attitudes.  But they would not be denied!

Yes, be of Good Cheer, we overcome with Joy and Faith in this New Year.

Happy Holy Days (they are everyday of the year)

GETTING THE LID OFF

JACOB GETS THE LID OFF

Jacob fled for his life. His brother literally wanted to kill him! He came to the distant land of Padan Aram where shepherd girls were waiting to water their congregation.  These shepherdesses were delayed because those strong enough to remove the stone protecting the well had not arrived. When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, he manhandled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep.

Several people were needed to move the stone but Jacob single-handedly removed it. Jacob was tough, the kind of guy who wrestles angels. By the way, he later married Rachel who was probably swooning, “My, he is so strong and handsome!”

GETTING THE CAP OFF

Many believers have perfectly fine wells with lots of water but their wells are capped. They cannot access the water because heavy weights block the opening. Those caps may seem so immense; it appears a herculean task to remove them. We can help one another get the caps off!

If you or your friend feels a restriction in experiencing the Father’s love and power see if one of these caps need to be removed.

Unbelief – God is not interested in me.

Fear – I dread the future

Pride – I must look important

Presumption – I can do it my way

Grief – Nothing can remove this pain

Unforgiveness – I would rather have them punished than personally know God’s peace

Ask God for discernment. He may reveal blockages like apathy, self-sufficiency, false loves or distractions. Those stone caps can be heavy so if you are having a little trouble don’t hesitate to ask a brother or sister to give you a hand. We can get the lids off together!

DIGGING WELLS

OUR NOBLE WELL-DIGGING PATRIARCHS

The Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were regarded as honorable for many reasons. One is, they dug wells to provided water for their clans.  Noble minded people dig wells, water works which satisfy needs.

There are intense conflicts and grumbling over water rights. The Patriarchs came up with honorable solutions for the clashes and complaints. Most involved time consuming, back-breaking labor. Answers to problems came with shovels attached!

What do we do when we discover our river bottom has dried into cracked puzzle pieces? Grab a spade!

RESPONDING TO THIRST

Thirsty people grumble, naturally. Churches are not happy with water shortages. We moan and complain. “Where is God’s presence?” “This church is bone dry!” “Where did the love and power go?” “Someone drained the pool!”

Some of us church hop looking for a place with dancing fountains. We hope for an easy drink. Others join a community, and when they realize water is needed, they do all they can to see their tribe gets it. Some complain, or leave. Others dig.

Responsible believers take ownership of problems and work on solutions.

Sometimes responding to the Spirit is a cinch.  We cannon-ball in, swim and frolic! When rivers go dry people dig wells.  They think this is preferable to dying.  If the river goes arid don’t despair, get to work! You remember Jesus saying, “He who believes in me, out of his inner being will flow….” The work of faith produces flow. Digging wells is done by faith.

I visited southern Israel near near Beer Sheva, the well of the oath, and saw a hand dug well. I could tell it was deep because the pebble I dropped took a long time before it plopped.  It must have been hard work. If you live in a place with a handful of inches of rain a year you dig or die.  Don’t whine if you don’t sense the presence of God. Get digging! Dig deep via hope and humility and intercession and gain water for your clan.

Do you want to see a party? Dig a well in a barren place where people walk miles for water. We were part of a well drilling project in Kenya. What a party they had when the water started pumping!

Many churches do not feel like partying. Who wants a dehydrated fellowship? Some dread going to worship service, fearing the next one will be as dry as the last

Our neighbors and people in faraway places are waiting for us to confirm, Jesus makes good His promise of living water.  They try drugs, entertainments and wacked out philosophies to satisfy their thirst. They despair that real drink can be found. You have their answer, but it may require digging.

THE WELL AT BEER

During the wanderings of Israel they dug a well. We get a snatch of the story in Numbers 21:16-18.

“From there they continued on to Beer, the well where the LORD said to Moses, ‘Gather the people together and I will give them water.’

Then Israel sang this song:

‘Spring up, O well!

Sing about it,

about the well that the princes dug,

that the nobles of the people sank–

the nobles with scepters and staffs.’”

THE MARK OF NOBILITY

Those that accessed water for the community were not commoners, they were nobles! Many want a noble title – Duke or Duchess, Apostle, Evangelist or Pastor. Don’t expect people to think you noble because of your genealogy. It will come because of you noble lifestyle, the way you care for others.

Noble leaders realize their responsibility for providing water. They do not idly show up for church, turn on the tap and expect anointed ministry. They probe God. They augur into His heart. They burrow into his word. These leaders are to be honored!

Digging wells is the work of genuine monarchs, knights, barons and counts. They willingly get their hands dirtied and blistered, down in the gloom, for the sake of their people. Laboring in a murky well- shaft may not be your idea of fun but it is a great idea for survival.

Nobility is gained by noble deeds. It is an expression of character. When water is found we celebrate, and the diggers are esteemed!

CELEBRATING

Water in short supply occasions quarrels and contentions.  Neighbors fight. When there is abundance fearful apprehension is washed away. We are friends again!

If you delve into the earth boring into the unseen depths you might stumble on diamonds, emeralds and rubies. You might discover natural gas, oil and coal, perhaps ancient fossils. You might also discover water. And if you, your family and flocks were really thirsty you would bring them together, drink deep and throw a party!

Those about you are watching you dig. They hope for your success because they would love a big draught of water. In fact, they would take a water break and throw a party!

NOTE: THIS IS ANOTHER EXCERPT FROM MY UPCOMING BOOK, RIVERFRONT PROPERTY:CONNECTING AT THE RIVER OF LIFE. BLESS THOSE WHO DIG!

17 DAYS

Wow what a trip! 17 days from Abilene, TX to Issaquah, WA and back.

Many stops to visit family and friends. Of course our VIP was our first grandchild, James. We saw folks we had not seen in 14 years! How fun to share stories of God’s goodness! How blessed and proud as so many are walking with the Savior in overcoming faith and joy!

We took satisfaction as investors in lives that are producing good fruit. We feel Apostle John’s joy; “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth” (3 John 4).

We saw the Grand Canyon. We would tell you about it but lack the descriptors!!!

A wonderful testimony of answered prayer is in motion in Abilene and we are so happy to be part of it. Drought has been severe the past several years. The churches in the city began a 21 day prayer vigil for rain in May. Signs were seen on home lawns and business reader boards, “Pray for Rain.”

We left Abilene praying! Long drives are great prayer opportunities. Much of our first day’s travel was for rain. And we continued praying for rain throughout the trip. On our last day of driving home we hammered in prayer for rain again. We were greeted with rainbows as we came into town. The county received 5 inches of rain. Some places had up to 10! We are delighting in puddles! Way to go God! Still praying for more of the pouring down of God’s undeserved goodness.

Ask the LORD for rain in the springtime;

it is the LORD who makes the storm clouds.

He gives showers of rain to men,

and plants of the field to everyone. (Zech 10:1)

THE BUNKIE EXPRESS

Thirty two years ago my parents drove what they called the Bunkie express to visit their newborn grandson Brian in Bend, Oregon. We have been driving our own Bunkie express as we make our way to visit our grandson James, Brian and Rebekah’s son, in Issaquah, Washington.  James was born Saturday. Our anticipation is to meet him for the first time tomorrow.

Most of us who witness the birth of a child must believe in miracles. That, which is fearfully and wonderfully made in the inner parts, when revealed, creates a forced wonder.  Wonderment over a tiny child is reflexive and involuntary.

So rejoice with us! “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given” (Isaiah 9:6).

THE KINGDOM AS PARTY

In our sober and serious desire to pursue Jesus we may miss an essential paradigm of His Kingdom: Party!

Our Church, New Hope in Abilene, TX, is seeking to be more intentional about celebrating with our new brothers and sisters and those returning to Him.

The best know party image in the NT is of the Prodigal’s return (Luke 15). Dad pulled out all the stops! Consider the magnitude of the celebration. The returning son received the best robe, a ring, a fat calf BBQ, side dishes galore, hugs, cheers and pats on the back, celebration, affirmations of son-ship, the local band playing music and dancing!

Now what if every time someone said “Yes!” to Jesus we threw a party like that?!

If you take a scan of the scriptures you will find plenty of references and allusions to the Kingdom as Party. We see that ultimately The Father Himself is the extravagant Splurge, and all are invited!

On this mountain the LORD Almighty will prepare

a feast of rich food for all peoples,

a banquet of aged wine–

the best of meats and the finest of wines.

On this mountain he will destroy

the shroud that enfolds all peoples,

the sheet that covers all nations;

he will swallow up death forever. (Isa 25:6-8 NIV)

Party Hearty!

CONSUMING FIRE

Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?” Isa 33:14

There are eight references to the presence of God being like “consuming fire.” At camp Barkeley the past few days we have seen uncontrollable fire with flames leaping 30 feet while winds were clocked at 60 MPH. By the grace of God only a corner of the property, about 300 acres, was burned but the fire raged on over three miles.

The winds took the fire to striking distance to our home. We were evacuated and we were out of our house two days. What a blessing to stay at the home of our friend Momma Lynn and then spend a night at the Retreat Center!

How encouraging to know that saints, were and are, praying! The support from the community, and other fire services, makes your heart swell with appreciation. Fire fighters are still on duty putting out hot spots, careful to protect against resurgence.

His mercies are new every morning! How can we express our gratitude?

The Fire investigator spent the day out on Barkeley looking for the source of the fire. They found that last Wednesday night we had lightening followed by an hour of drenching rain, almost like a fire hose from heaven. Lightening had struck a juniper tree. It caught fire but the rain put out the fire to a smolder. On Sunday it was fanned into flame again!

It’s extraordinary to us that it sat for four days in a tree trunk until a more opportune time. Sounds like our adversary. Now we are in the “always be ready” stage. The firefighters are still staged over the hills and graders have dozed huge swaths through the mesquite and cedars for breaks. There is a train track and electric lines between us and the fire site and because of the dozers we have at least two more swaths to give us time…in case!

We are amazed at the One called, “Consuming Fire!”

PURCHASING POWER

LISTEN TO THIS BLOG HERE!

Some believers talk up the cross and scarcely mention the resurrection.  Others will share the resurrection and give little time to the cross. The events are two sides of a coin, and that coin had lots of purchasing power!

When I see people wearing a cross there are two thoughts.  First, we should never forget the extraordinary expenditures of our Lord!  Second, “I wish there was a necklace picture of Jesus saying, “Do you have anything here to eat?”

The internet has us click on “icons.” The church has used the cross, the fish and bread, the dove and butterfly. One biblical image we might “click on” is in Revelation 5:6;

“Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.”

If we were transported with John, and had the courage, we might have asked, “Excuse me, but I have an odd feeling that at some time you died. But how could that be?”

Paul cites the benefits of both the passion and glorification in Romans 4:25; “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.”

It seems if we want people convinced and saved we should preach the cross, but if we want people changed and empowered then we should preach the limitless ramifications of the resurrection.

He once hung on a cross but He is returning on a white horse!

That’s power for purchasing!
