A ROPE AND A NOBLE CAUSE

A health club can be great place to meet people and get in shape. You may find friendly rivalry and competition. Your morale can get a boost.  We also meet plenty of insecure people at gyms. Gyms are a lot like churches.

We go to Church because we know we are not in the condition we want to be in. We know we ought to be pushing or pulling on something. We also want to have fulfilling relationships. Insecure people are at church. What better place?

At the gym some of the guys, and yes, even the gals, are comparing themselves to others. “Are his arms thicker than mine?” “Is her waist trimmer than mine?” “Who is stronger?” It’s so much like church!

We look at the world through our individual insecurities. “Am I superior or inferior to you?” It’s silly, isn’t it!

Team sports are a way to move our eyes from “me” to “we.”   What if we engaged everyone in the gym, or in the church, in a team task to bring corporate achievement?

How about getting everyone on a long rope – with the other end tied to a noble cause?

Let’s pull together!

A MAN WITH A MAID

“There are three things which are too wonderful for me,

Yes, four which I do not understand:

The way of an eagle in the air;

The way of a serpent upon a rock;

The way of a ship in the midst of the sea;

And the way of a man with a maid.” (Prov30:18-19)

35 years ago we were on a honeymoon to the Oregon coast. The picture is grainy but the memories are sweet!

I married the bright, vivacious, generous, fun-loving, can-do Pam Grogan, my lover, my friend, my counselor, my prod, my perspective glass. She has challenged me, believed in me, exhorted me and been faithful to her vows.

Pam has been the single, most remarkable person I have known. So decisive, determined, devoted! She has generously given me four stellar children whom she has raised to be people of excellence.

The proverb says, “Behind ever great man there is a woman.” Sometimes she is rolling her eyes! No pretense to greatness; I certainly did marry out of my league in terms of passion for Jesus, resolve to seek Him out and keep the fires stoked!

With Pam it is easy to say, “Many women have done noble things, but you excel them all!” (Prov 31:29)

“Give her of the fruit of her hands; And let her works praise her in the gates!” (Prov 31:31)

POINTING OUT THE RAINBOW

Hey guys, come out right now! Hurry you need to see this! This is amazing!

We are urged, and so we come. We step onto the porch or back patio, we pull back the drapes or stand looking out the open garage door – and we see it –

The Vivid Sunset

The Heat Lightening

The Thundering Hail

The Picturesque Clouds

The Pelting Rain

The Ice Designs on the Trees

We might have missed it if the messenger had not called.

Signs and wonders are around us but too few heralds to call us to attention. I am grateful for those who see Wonders and point them out to me!

KEEPING A JOURNAL

We scanned through journal entries for 2014. How grateful and thankful we are!

At the end of most days I take 5 to 10 minutes to chronicle the day’s activities, news or thoughts. As I re-read the entries my appreciation for God’s goodness increases. When I scan a year’s worth of journaling, of watering roses, replacing wiper blades and visiting dear ones I reflect with appreciation.

Our memories are such frail things. How quickly we may forget! 2014 included little things like moving to Abilene, TX and big things like loading a shipping container with relief supplies for Africa.

By keeping a daily journal I can revisit the blessings of a good tax return, moving furniture at Camp Barkeley or prophetic words of encouragement.

Moses kept a journal. The priests and kings of Israel did the same. It was good that King Ahasuerus kept one. Esther and the Jews of Persia were saved because of it.

I encourage you to preserve the blessings of God by keeping a daily journal. You may do it on paper or on computer (backed up). It takes only a few moments each day but preserves a lifetime of perspective for you, and perhaps for your generations.

So, record the dream of the night, what was for breakfast, the answer to prayer, the surprise visitor, the grief or joy of the day. This little investment will bring big returns.

“The weakest ink is better than the strongest memory.” – Chinese Proverb.

THE GIFT OF FAITH FOR CHRISTMAS!

I rarely have a Christmas letter out on time. Haven’t even tried for a few years. But on our way home from a visit to family I had an experience with God. Of all places it was IHOP! (International House of Pancakes) :~)

Our waitress was young and embarrassed. The restaurant  had run out of the breakfast items we requested from the menu. Not once but twice she came back to our table saying, “I’m sorry we are out of…!”   Surprisingly, no chicken in the place or whole grain pancakes either!

Steve and I looked again (#3) at the menu and made our choices. We bantered about a restaurant that doesn’t keep enough on hand to handle flux in the patrons. We were up-beat and not dissuaded. As encouragers we let the young lady know we were not upset but we would be satisfied.

Then I began to hear something else… “I will not be denied!” Whether Hannah at the tabernacle threshold, Esther in the outer court awaiting a summons, or Mary, looking at her promise on the cross, would these women be denied? They had staked everything on their hearts desire.

I believe God is offering “Good Cheer” at this time. As many are walking through this worlds tribulations…”be of Good Cheer I have overcome the world.”  (John 16:33)

Perhaps you have been comfortable with your place, your relationships and how things are going with God, when an unusual event takes place. What now? This is awkward, uncomfortable, shocking, a crisis, you name it. You were not expecting it! Will you let it go, or will you persist and press in to ask, “What are you saying God?”

I also felt it’s time to ask for a big gift from our Daddy God for Christmas, something that will upgrade the whole ‘gifts of the Spirit’ package. (I Corinthians 12 -14)

Ask for the gift of Faith for Christmas! We will appreciate what that gift does to all the others and our personal relationship with the Godhead.  To access ALL the gifts Faith is a key. He’s looking for Sons and Daughters to be full of faith. So ask and expect, I think you’ll hear answers to your deepest longings – some which you have dropped long ago.  It may cost you. It cost each of the mentioned women to go against the grain, the religious world, their families and cultural attitudes.  But they would not be denied!

Yes, be of Good Cheer, we overcome with Joy and Faith in this New Year.

Happy Holy Days (they are everyday of the year)

SURVEILLANCE CAMERA

At the hotel or grocery we may see signs saying, “Smile, you are on camera.” We hear on a business call, “This conversation may be recorded for quality control.”

Ultimately there is no “perfect” crime where people may “get away with it.” It is all recorded and on camera. Indeed, it seems that a great cloud of witnesses is watching the affairs of mankind.

The wig, sunglasses and paste-on beard may allow the robber to “get away” for a while. But superior recording devices have it all.

There is no such thing as an unsolved murder, theft or arson. Human beings may not find those responsible but Heaven is simply waiting for the proper time to reveal what is chronicled in the books. “There is nothing hidden which will not be revealed.”

Hidden acts of kindness will also be revealed. The secret drop-off of groceries or cash in an envelope is all recorded. Secret prayer, fasting and acts of generosity cannot be concealed long.

Not only are our actions and words on tape, digital medium, or something-or-other, our undisclosed motives are as well. In fact there is a time coming where the secrets of all hearts will be laid bare. His camera discerns the contents of our hearts. Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

There is a day of assessment, of accountability, where an audit will be done on my life and yours. I hope we may stand unashamed at His coming, with good works and pure motives to show for ourselves.

WAITING

You may wait 2 minutes for fast food. The disciples waited 10 days in an upper room for Jesus promise of the Spirit.

My friend John was ministering in a church and invited people to come forward. About 15 people came and stood in a circle. John prayed a short prayer for the Holy Spirit to move among us. I had no sense of the Spirit’s presence. I think others felt the same. John stood patiently and waited. I was amazed that he waited several minutes and nothing seemed to be happening.

I might have said, “Well, God bless you all, have a good night.” John continued to patiently wait. After several minutes one of the men suddenly fell to the hard concrete floor! He was overcome, surprised by the Spirit. A deep, deep work was going on! He was being freed from addictions and receiving healing. Others were also touched. If John had not been willing to lead us in waiting we might have missed our opportunity.

Waiting and listening is our job. Power and love is the Spirit’s.

PIPES AND WIRES

PLUMBING COLLEGE

I dreamed I was walking through a college library where dozens of students sat diligently studying the art of plumbing. In front of the students’ cubicles were posted technical plumbing diagrams. One student came to me and spoke earnestly, “I just want to go someplace where they need the most basic of plumbing.” It seemed that he had a broken heart for those who were thirsty. As he spoke I imagined a poor village where they might walk miles to get water. How they would love a simple spigot of water in their town square.

ELECTRICAL COLLEGE

In another dream I was visiting a college as a guest speaker. I had brought in a very thick electrical power cable. One end was tied into a power panel, the other was lying on the ground and not yet hooked up to anything. I felt the power cable would activate the students.

GETTING AN EDUCATION

Would you like a bit of schooling in the plumbing and electrical arts? Having remodeled a couple homes and owned apartment buildings I have firsthand experience in plumbing and wiring. I won’t traumatize you with stories of running to the store four times to get a water heater installed, or welding screwdrivers with electrical sparks. Spurts and jolts have been part of my education. What kind of education have you had? Yeshua’s disciples had fabulous mentoring. They observed Jesus heal the sick and cast out demons. Reading between the lines, it looks like they practiced under their Rabbi’s supervision. He sent out the twelve, two by two, to “do the stuff.”  They were frontrunners, giving people a taste of the kingdom and a heads up, saying in essence, “We are here to let you know the kingdom is at hand! Jesus is making a circuit of cities and coming to your town!”  The disciples were given these instructions. “As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’  Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matt 10:7-9)

WATER THROUGH THE PIPES

I was sitting in my office when a woman came to talk to my secretary. I spoke through the open door, “Claudine, how are you?” She answered, “Fine, but arthritis in my thumbs is bothering me.” I felt the Spirit and said, “Come over here. “ She walked to my chair and I put my hands over her thumbs. I prayed a simple prayer. I felt the Spirit rise up through my waist and like water flow down my arms. Power flowed through my hands. She was cured.

IT WAS ELECTRIC

Each of us take turns being on the giving end, and receiving end. My back was tense and tired. My nerves were pinched. This was a serious, long-term back ache. My friend Jean put her hands on my back and prayed! The power was electric! My chest pumped up and a rod of steel ran down my backbone. I felt like Popeye after his spinach! Jean was a cable for God’s electricity!

THE ABC’S OF PIPES AND WIRES

We lived in a country home with plenty of water. A stream up the mountain poured into a pipe. We were down the hill with plenty of water pressure. The process of being a minister is rather simple. Run your pipes to God’s heaven then stay low so the water may gain pressure.  Finally, be prepared to love people. If several of us held hands and the people at either end held the hot and ground wire we would all get a tingle.  Ministry to others is as simple as holding Jesus’ hand on one side and your friend’s on the other. Power is conducted by contact.

GLORY AND MARVELING

“…the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed.” (1 Thessalonians 1:10)

There will be no disappointment among the saints at the appearing of Jesus. No one will say, “The advertisements and trailers made it look great but the movie was a bust.”

Spielberg and Lucas have produced incredible stuff but nothing will compare with this wide-screen production! Only a few shepherds saw it the first time but everyone will see the panoramic sequel. You won’t miss it, wherever you stand on the planet. In fact every eye will see His glorious coming with heaven’s epic entourage! The cast will be so immense that Christ’s escorts will seem like water droplets making up an all-encompassing cloud.

There are times when we are with family and friends and there is an immediate weather report. “Hey guys! Come quick, you need to see this. We are amazed as we come to the patio and see the glorious sunrise, torrential monsoon rains, a double rainbow or baseball sized hail. We will need a new word to replace “awesome” when Christ returns.

We look forward to vacations, birthdays, graduations, weddings and births of babies. This event is the Christian’s blessed hope and eager expectation. We are, “awaiting the blessed hope, even the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13).  Whatever our age or circumstances, lovers of Jesus have something to look forward to!

Those who have stiff-armed Jesus are in for dreadful, calamitous ruin. They will hide in caves and call on the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?” (Rev 6:16-17)

We must not be pretenders but true believers. Too many think of the Second Coming of Jesus as a doctrine rather than a young woman’s hope for the perfect wedding to the perfect man.

The crown is not for those who “believe” that Jesus is returning. It is for those who “long for” His returning. “Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” (2 Tim 4:8)

Watchmen, Stand tall! Heads up! Our redemption is drawing near!

“My soul waits for the Lord

More than watchmen wait for the morning,

More than watchmen wait for the morning.”  (Ps 130:6)

GETTING THE LID OFF

JACOB GETS THE LID OFF

Jacob fled for his life. His brother literally wanted to kill him! He came to the distant land of Padan Aram where shepherd girls were waiting to water their congregation.  These shepherdesses were delayed because those strong enough to remove the stone protecting the well had not arrived. When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, he manhandled the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep.

Several people were needed to move the stone but Jacob single-handedly removed it. Jacob was tough, the kind of guy who wrestles angels. By the way, he later married Rachel who was probably swooning, “My, he is so strong and handsome!”

GETTING THE CAP OFF

Many believers have perfectly fine wells with lots of water but their wells are capped. They cannot access the water because heavy weights block the opening. Those caps may seem so immense; it appears a herculean task to remove them. We can help one another get the caps off!

If you or your friend feels a restriction in experiencing the Father’s love and power see if one of these caps need to be removed.

Unbelief – God is not interested in me.

Fear – I dread the future

Pride – I must look important

Presumption – I can do it my way

Grief – Nothing can remove this pain

Unforgiveness – I would rather have them punished than personally know God’s peace

Ask God for discernment. He may reveal blockages like apathy, self-sufficiency, false loves or distractions. Those stone caps can be heavy so if you are having a little trouble don’t hesitate to ask a brother or sister to give you a hand. We can get the lids off together!
