FAMOUS PEOPLE YET TO BE LAUNCHED

A tour bus was traveling through the ancient castles and cities of Europe. As the bus entered a city a man on asked the guide, “Were any famous men born in this city?” The guide answered, “No, only babies.”

Distinction may not come with the birthday suit. It does not come from geography.  Fame often blooms on the wrong side of the tracks and with those lacking proper genes.

Consider Nathaniel’s diminishment of Jesus’ home town; “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”

Greatness can emerge from unexpected places.

Who expects greatness to come from someone deaf and blind?

Who expects greatness to come out of a life born in slavery?

Jesus said in Matthew 11:11, “I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he” That means, my believing friend, that as a true follower of Jesus you are greater than hall of fame slugger John the Baptist!  There is kingdom greatness for you because our Father wills it.

Child of God, you are famous in heaven! As heaven works its way to earth this will become more obvious.

COLLIDING WITH THE FUTURE

It was my “get-er-done” day and the Parkway was insane. So like any good East Tennessee holler dweller I used the back roads to get to my hair appointment and varied destinations.

My husband and I have been working like little squirrels putting up wood in the wood shed, cleaning up piles of limbs and brush, buttoning up the place for winter. It’s been so pleasant working outside with the beautiful leaves slowly dropping from the trees.

I drove out after our morning prayer and chores. It had been dry for a couple weeks but had rained the night before.

The ride through Little Valley, Waldens Creek and Goose Gap was lovely. Coming down a long curvy decline I rounded an outside curve and headed into a tight inside curve when the truck began to slide on the wet leaves. I called out “Jesus” and tried to steer away from crossing the line.

“BAM!” A white four door was just turning up that same double curve. The truck hit them in the driver’s door panel and pushed them into the ditch, the reaction of the collision pushed the truck back into the correct lane.

I looked around, saw no other traffic, put on the flashers and headed over to see about the other car and folks.

A young man looked up at me stunned and began to pull himself out of the broken window.  I asked, “Are you hurt?” He shook his head “No”, and I turned to directing traffic.

At the right time I moved the truck off the road and asked the accident questions. I was clear headed and felt no anxiety or usual shakiness that can happen after a traumatic accident.

The driver had one passenger with him. They were not talking but milling around. Finally it came out, the driver was driving with a suspended license and the car had no insurance. They talked about switching, “who was driving.”

Ok I’m a woman, alone waiting for the police and they want to pull something shady. I just nodded and suggested they keep talking it through. I was quietly thanking Jesus no one was hurt and that He had kept me.

When the officer arrived, he immediately went to the two men and began asking questions. I noticed his tone was a bit “critical parent.” I wondered if he knew these boys.

It all came out. Not only was the driver driving with a suspended license and no insurance; the license plate on the vehicle did not match the vehicle.

I had my paperwork in hand and assured the officer I was not hurt. He was very pleasant but let me know I was at fault. I agreed with him, I had crossed the line into oncoming traffic! He told me there had been two other accidents at that spot that morning.

While the officer was writing up the report I looked over at the young man, now sitting on the ground, pale and smoking a cigarette. I went over and asked him, “Do you go to church?”  He shook his head “no” and said, “I’m going to jail.” He had a wife and two children. Obviously he was not making the best decisions.

I asked if I could pray for him. He agreed and I put my hand on his shoulder and prayed.

Then I told him, “When you stand before the judge, tell him you want to go to Life Changers Outreach. They will help you start making the right choices and help you become the man you want to be inside.” He looked me in the eye and said, “OK.”

The wreckers had strapped up our vehicles and were ready to roll. We said, “Good bye.”  He thanked me and said he was sorry. I said the same. I reminded him of the opportunity that may be before him and to remember what I had said.

I will miss that sweet truck and the fun we have had in it, but I’m forever grateful to my God who can turn even a bad situation into an opportunity for His Glory to shine. I kept thinking, I feel so expectant that something good is coming out of this. I could only Praise Him!

GALILEO AND COMPANY

Last night in a dream I was at a garage sale. I picked up a long narrow telescope. It was priced at $30. Should I buy it? On waking I knew I must!

The eye is a miraculous organ. With it we can reach across the room and “grab” a chair or coffee pot. A telescope extends our grasp and makes things that seem tiny in the distance to look bigger. The microscope on the other hand makes tiny things seem bigger than they really are.

When the Psalmist says, “O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together” (Ps 34:3 KJV) he is not saying, “Let’s look in the microscope and make our tiny god look big.” He is saying, “Let’s get out our telescopes and understand how gigantic God and His purposes really are.

The Lord Jesus promised us in John 16:13, “when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

For a modest price of spending time in the Word and Spirit our vision of the future can become telescopic! We perceive the greatness of God, the things He has planned for us and how we fit in His universe.

Here is a prayer: “Heavenly Father, we need long distance vision as well as near! Give us Your perspective glass so we may magnify Your greatness!

CONSERVATION AND LIBERALITY

The words “conservative” and “liberal” represent two wonderful virtues.

We see the wisdom of the conservative in Proverbs 21:20; “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil”.

We see the blessings of liberality in Proverbs 11:2; “A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

The conservationist wants to save and preserve things. That’s definitely a virtue, assuming we are trying to preserve the right things. A liberal is a generous soul who is always sharing with others. That is a fine virtue as well, assuming that we are sharing things of value.

The problem is when either the conservationist or the generous are corrupted. It is nasty when the “conservative” steals to themselves constitutional authority meant to be shared. It is ugly when the “liberal” steals resources to solicit favors.

I see the beaver as blending the best of conservation and liberality. Beaver dams create rich ecosystems. The waters are both saved up as well as passed on. The beaver must have gotten their cue from the Creator who in Christ abundantly saves and generously gives.

We pray for genuine conservatives and liberals to appreciate one another and work meaningfully together! All we ask is that the water not be polluted by self-serving pretenders.

FACINATION

Image a group of believers arguing. One says, “God is a solid Rock.” Another says, “No, He is a good Shepherd.” Another says, “No, He is a Father.” Still another says, “God is King!”

Still others might argue that the most compelling truth about God is His patience, justice, creative power, or His pre-determination.

We are not actually arguing but inclining to attractive aspects of the Lord’s personality and purposes.

Since the wonders of God are endless each of us will gravitate to the marvels that most compel. But who, after all, may know which facet is most beautiful?

The Treasure that we have in Yeshua is so great that we will not have time in eternity to admire wholly the facets of the Gem.

Which of His FACETS most FACINATES you?

WHERE’S THE BEEF?

Occasionally we hear someone referencing, “The meat of the word” as if the meat were some deep, ponderous revelation. If you have thought this way I’d like to give you a friendly correction. Now it is true in our culture that we use expressions like, “That’s a thought I’ll have to chew on” but that is not what is going on when we talk of spiritual meat.

In Hebrews 5 there is a rebuke that the saints have not advanced beyond infancy. They were told that they needed milk not solid food. The meat does not refer to cognitive advancement but practical applications, doing the word, – the practices of:

Turning from sin to God

Actively putting faith in Him

The exercise of baptisms

Actually putting hands on people to pray for them

Truly living lives preparing for the resurrection and eternal judgment

The word, “meat “used in the KJV is typically translated as “solid food.”  “Trophe” means nourishment. We get solid nourishment by actually doing what God wishes, not by being able to recite biblical concepts.

Messiah shows this to be true in John 4:34, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” Meat = doing the Father’s will.

Our Lord went on to say, “For every one that uses milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.” Babies are inactive. They lie in the lap and suck milk. They are not doers, simply receivers. Adults eat solid food and do things.

You see, babes are not skilled in living out righteousness. They are receivers only. Our goal is to grow up and become doers of the will of God. As we do, we find the beef.

RADIATING AUTHORITY

LISTEN TO THIS BLOG HERE!

It was around 1990 and the government was talking about expanding the Yakima, Washington Firing Range. I lived next door and was not sure this was in the best interest of either our military or our community and wrote a letter to the editor expressing my cautions. The military leadership at Fort Lewis, Washington read my editorial and invited me to come and talk. I brought a few other local pastors with me.

We were greeted hospitably at Fort Lewis  We met a man that still leaves a strong impression on me when I think of him, Commandant Lieutenant General Calvin A. H. Waller. I have never met a man that exuded such confidence. The man radiated with authority! He cordially listened to our concerns and shared with us his perspectives on the value of expanding the Firing Range in Yakima. We shared lunch with hundreds of soldiers in the mess while General Waller mixed with the soldiers.

You may learn more about this man at http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/cawaller.htm

I was struck by a comment General Waller made, saying in essence. “I believe that expanding the Firing Center is in the military’s best interest. I will ask for the expansion of the center. But I am a soldier. If I am refused I will salute and say, ‘Yes sir.’”

General Waller was a man loaded with authority. Thousands of men, tons of machinery and probably a few tactical nukes were at his command, yet he knew the limits of his authority and that his authority came from above him.

There is a pressing need for leadership with competence and character today. We need it from the top down in government. It is imperative in business, education and media. It is most critical in the Church of Jesus. Without it in our families our culture is toast.

My encouragement to you today is to pray into and exercise the leadership role(s) the Lord has assigned you.

“For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me.

I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes;

and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes.

I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it” (Luke 7:8).

ONE ANOTHERING

Do you practice the “gathered together” passages?

The sheep are gathered in the flock

The bricks are gathered into a building

The children are gathered in the family

The soldiers are gathered into an army

A seductive philosophy of individualism has pillaged us. We separate ourselves, saying to other Lovers of Christ – people with powerful gifts, callings and perspectives, “I don’t need you!”  (1 Cor 12:21)

Be encouraged by some of the dozens of “ONE ANOTHER” passages. Fortify yourself and be cemented into relationship with other believers:

Romans 12:10  Honor one another above yourselves.

Romans 12:16  Live in harmony with one another

Galatians 5:13  Serve one another in love.

Ephesians 4:32  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Ephesians 5:21  Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Colossians 3:16  Admonish one another with all wisdom

1 Thessalonians 5:11  Encourage one another and build each other up

1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.

THE OTHER LOVE CHAPTER

LISTEN TO THIS BLOG HERE!

Did you know that First John has more about love, pound for pound, than any book in the Bible?

Our favorite chapter on love is 1 Corinthians 13. Its poetry and truth sweep us up to the third heaven! It may interest you to know that the word “love” appears in that chapter 9 times. In 1 John 4 “love” appears 25 times! 1 Corinthians has the elegance of love, but John has the get-er-done of love.

John uses more, “love one another’s”, than any other Bible contributor.  “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God” (1 John 4:7).

There is a church tradition which says that when John was an old man in Ephesus, he had to be carried to the church by the arms of his disciples.  At these meetings, he was accustomed to say no more than, “Little children, love one another!”  After a time, the leaders wearied at always hearing the same words. They asked, “Master, why do you always say this?” “It is the Lord’s command,” was his reply. “And if this alone be done, it is enough!”

Perhaps you’d like to read the other love chapter – 1 John 4.
