The shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land is a relief. Peter’s shadow brought cures to people. Several times the Psalmists wrote of finding refuge in the shadow of God’s wings. Shadows alert us to people or things coming our way.
We don’t typically strive to find shadows. Children may create them while playing with a flashlight in a dark room but playing with shadows interests us only a short time. Shadows in scripture often portray the brevity of life and the end of the road, ”The shadow of death.”
I would rather have a hamburger than its shadow. I would rather kiss my true love than her shadow. Are you hunting shadows or The Shadow Maker?
Scripture exhorts us to remember the mighty works of the Lord. Don’t forget those times when the consequence of the presence of God was frogs galore, a divided sea, provision in the wilderness and victory in battle. The reason for remembering these things is that we would then recall The Great God Himself and turn to face Him!
When we celebrate Passover, tabernacles or participate in baptism and communion we are dealing with shadows. We appreciate these things but then turn to find out What/Who is casting the shadow.
“Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink,
or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day.
These are a shadow of the things that were to come;
the reality, however, is found in Christ.” Col 2:16-18
Colossians 2:16-18 Tells us Christ is reality not shadow.
Hebrews 8:3-6 Tells us Jesus is superior to the shadow of the tabernacle.
Hebrews 10:1-7 Tells us Christ did not come as a shadow but with a tangible body that creates them.
There is a place for rules and practices, traditions and customs but let us not get caught in the shadows. Let us rather turn to face The Shadow Maker!
“He reveals the deep things of darkness
and brings deep shadows into the light.” Job 12:22
