FEARLESS: THE “I AM WITH YOU” PRINCIPLE

I’m collecting people’s responses to the question:

“How do you deal with fear?”

Let us know how you overcome!

There is a truth so dominate in the Scripture that it is repeated dozens of times. It is the sometimes forgotten but not-so-secret reality which flattens fear with courage. It is the “I am with you”principle.

We may give many suggestions for overcoming fear but this one crowns them all; the awareness and knowledge that our mighty, wise and loving Lord is with us!

There is no fear of a band of bullies when a cloud of angels stand with us.

After all, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”(Rom 8:31)

For those of you who love Bible bullets to blast away fear, load up.

“Ready on the firing line. Fire at will!”

Gen 26:24 That night the LORD appeared to him [Isaac] and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Haggai 2:4 But now be strong, O Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD. `Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD, `and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.

Zephaniah 3:15  The Lord has taken away your punishment, he has turned back your enemy. The Lord the King of Israel, is with you;never again will you fearany harm.

Haggai 2:5  This is what I covenanted with you, when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.

Jeremiah 42:11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him, declares the Lord, for I am with youand will save you and deliver you from his hands.

Joshua 1:8. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the lord your God will be withyou wherever you go.

Deuteronomy 31:8The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid: do not be discouraged.

Isaiah 43:5  Do not be afraid, for I am with you;I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west.

Jeremiah 46:28.Do not be afraid,Jacob my servant, for I am with you, declares the Lord.

Deuteronomy 20:1  When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraidof them, because the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you

1 Chronicles 28:20  Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord Is finished.

2 Chronicles 20:17  Do not be afraid;do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you

Deuteronomy 31:6  Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you: he will never leave you nor forsake you.

John 14:27  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid

Mark 4:40  He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?

Let us know your strategies for blasting away fear.

CHAPTER THREE: LOVE AT THIRD LOOK

I woke with these lyrics playing in my mind.

“Oh, isn’t this amazing?
It’s my favorite part because you’ll see
Here’s where she meets Prince Charming
But she won’t discover that it’s him ’til Chapter Three!”

The lyrics are from Beauty and the Beast. Artful words and gorgeous music!

Meeting Pam for the first time was not love at first sight. I knew her casually for a couple years at a large church we attended. I saw her as fun and energetic and a serious Christian, but there was no romantic chemistry. In fact, Pam got engage to a friend of mine, which I thought was just great. Bob and she seemed to be a fun couple. A month before the wedding they both had cold feet. I shared lunch with Bob and listened to his struggles.

After listening, I prodded Bob, “Look, Pam is a great gal. I think you should go ahead and marry her!” He looked back at me and responded, “Why don’t you?” I sputtered a bit at the question, but of course, I had no romantic interest at all.

A year or two later Pam and I started co-teaching a college class. I began seeing her in a new light. She was creative, spontaneous, industrious – more fun than I had realized, deeper in Christ, and determined to do the right, no matter the price.

One day she gave me a gift she had made, a sailing ship made of modeling clay and glued to a slice of tree trunk. It quoted Joshua 1:9; ”Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

There was something sweet about that expression of friendship. Then I took a second look. Perhaps a third look. It was Chapter Three! I started to realize she was cute, in fact attractive. Come to think of it, she was vivacious and beautiful!

The revelation of Jesus as Prince Charming comes to many of us in Chapter Three! Some think Peter’s first encounter with Jesus was when Jesus commandeered Peter’s boat for a pulpit, and then had him go out deep for the miraculous catch. Then supposedly, Peter spontaneously left his whole career to follow Jesus.

The real story is more like this: Peter first met Jesus while John was baptizing. Remember, at that time Jesus changed Simon’s name to Rocky. Jesus’ mother probably had family in Capernaum. They had visited on several occasions. Jesus set up home base in Capernaum. He had been preaching in the region and had actually been living at Peter’s house for some time. They certainly had had many discussions. The great catch of fish was Chapter Three!

Few of us meet someone for the first time and decided spontaneously, “They are the one for me!” Learning of Jesus initially may be the same. We like Him, but it is too soon to talk about marriage in chapter one. Hang around. You will be amazed at the revelations in Chapter Three!

What’cha think? Have you had a Chapter Three revelation in a relationship? Tell us about it.

THE EDITOR: POWER AND CULTURAL SWAY

You are the editor of the news service. It’s press time and you must decide what news will get top billing. The staff settles on two major stories. You must decide which one takes first place. Here are your two options:

OPTION 1. STAGERING DEATH TOLLS!

“An estimated 151,000 people were catastrophically swept away today. This day will be an anniversary of mourning for years to come. Millions are devastated as they lay their loved ones in graves. Hearts go out for their loss. Stay tuned for details.”

OPTION 2.  WORLD-WIDE JUBILATION!

“Amazing news today as an estimated 360,000 babies are freshly introduced to our world! Hundreds of thousands of proud parents rejoice while millions of family members and friends join the revelries! Stay tuned for our special montage capturing delight from every nation of the world!

The editor tells us daily what is valuable and news-worthy. They hold tremendous power and cultural sway, for intentionally, or not, they shape cultural perspectives, values and attitudes.  They tell us what is important enough to be news.

By the way, an estimated 151,000 die daily and  about 360,000 are born daily

Sadly, some news services look for startling headlines like, “243 DIE IN PLANE CRASH.” They know 10,000 children starving daily would quickly become old and redundant news.

Sometimes I get angry at editors, or the people who pay their salaries. For I feel money or negative social agendas are at work.

People can be vulnerable to the emotional stimulants in news stories. Many editors seek a new yank-you-about emotional drug to share with viewers, listeners and readers. Fear and indignation sell to the addicted. Pity and resentfulness to others. The love people have for being judges is also a powerful drug. Heart-warming stories sell to a few. All of these may generate income for news services.

Many editors and the powers behind them spin their stories to reinforce their beliefs, or at least in an attempt to get people believing something.

Anecdotal stories are famous tools for news/persuasion.

“Innocent mother killed by gun.” The point is guns are bad.

“Gun saves family in home assault.” The point is guns are useful.

Any number of cultural beliefs are shaped leveraging anecdotes.

An editor knows how to do this

My heart goes out to decent reporters and editors with integrity who are often hard up for news. Perhaps you should give them a suggestion for a story to cover.

You can literally “Help a reporter” out by going to https://www.helpareporter.com Perhaps a desperate reporter or editor will thank you for your lead.

By the way, you are the editor of your own life. I hope you will see life about you and know what is really news-worthy, and share it with others.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR EARS?

I was in a sticking point in ministry and needed counsel. We were living on our mini-farm on Wilson Creek Road in Ellensburg, Washington. I traveled to visit John Sandford for counsel in Sandpoint, Idaho. John was one of the fathers of the modern prophetic movement. Years before when I had met him for the first time he told me things about myself only God could reveal. His words got me on track with my calling.

I remember the night before getting down by the side of the bed and praying for our next day’s meeting. I asked God to give me a dream to share with John the next day that might help in the counseling.

That night I dreamed I was walking down the middle of #6 road. (As you went South on our road, Wilson Creek, it became #6 Road)

There was a rickety shack taking up both lanes of the road. I went into the shack and to the far-right corner where there was a mimeograph* machine. I entered it, flipped through it, and was spit out of the shack on the far end. You can only do that in a dream!

John Sandford was standing in front of me.He looked at me with concern and said, “What happened to your ears?” I became self conscious and put my hands over my ears. I said, “It must have happened when I went through the mimeograph machine.”

John told me the dream was perfect.

First, rather than going North in the “Will of the Son” I was going South (down hill) on #6 road. Six is the number of man’s way.

Going through the mimeograph was a picture of trying to duplicate the way others were doing ministry. Indeed, I was looking at other pastors and wondering what kind of minister I should be. Should I be a gregarious, glad-handing, slap-you-on the back pastor? A compassionate visit-in-every-home pastor? A detailed administrator pastor? A scholastic theologian pastor? I was looking for others to imitate.

John explained, by trying to copy other leaders’ personalities or approaches, or duplicating their gifts and callings, I was no-longer myself. He said I was designed to be wildly creative, but by trying to conform to other people’s images I was losing myself and my ability to hear God’s direction.

I still reflect back on that experience and its lesson. Because of it I have become more, myself, more comfortable in my own shoes.

I’ve learned to appreciate the amazing qualities of other saints. I honor them and learn from them, finding inspiration. But when we are truly ourselves, and not copies of others, we find the greatest personal satisfaction, and express the uniqueness of God’s creative genious.

Take care of your ears!

  • Mimeograph: a dinosaur duplicator pre-dating the copy machine.

“YOU WILL SEE JESUS, FACE TO FACE”

Adoration of the Mystic Lamb,Ghent Altarpiece

It was the middle of the night and I needed to relieve myself. My groggy plan was simply to do my business and get my head back on the pillow. As I stood and started to the bathroom I was surprised by a voice as clear as any conversation you have ever had. It spoke, “You will see Jesus face to face.” I had trouble getting back to sleep afterwards. That was thirty years ago.

I have often harkened back to that surprising voice in the night. In many ways that word has been profoundly answered. It has not happened with a vivid and tangible face to face encounter but with astonishing Holy Spirit experiences, answers to prayer, prophetic encounters, dreams and visions. There have been a few appearances of Jesus in my dreams but I still have a great longing to see Him lucidly and in tangible reality.

I know there is a pan-ultimate day when all of us will have the opportunity to see Jesus face to face. It makes me shudder and thrill with anticipation.  Honestly, I feel a push-me-pull-you in encountering Jesus. I have so much desire to see him fully, yet I have had experiences with his glory which have overwhelmed me to incapacitation and trembling.

Just last night, in a dream, I was in a church building where I was praying longingly, brokenly to experience his presence and see His face. He began to make himself known in such power and holiness, I was pressed and physically overwhelmed! Pam heard me sighing and groaning and shook me awake. I have a little idea as to why God told Moses, “You cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”

Apparently, the Jews are not troubled by our western thinking and see no contradiction between the exhortations to seek His face and the thought, you can’t survive if you see Him.

Jesus was seen walking about in His flesh suit and people typically managed seeing Him trouble-free.

But when Peter, James and John saw him transfigured on the mountain it was overwhelming.

When John saw Jesus in His glory in Revelation it was not the Jesus of former, familiar times but the glorified Jesus. John was down as a dead man.

One of my prayers is that my constitution and character be upgraded in wiring, and much grace be added, so I may have the capacity and ability to stand and see more of His wonderful Face! I think my attitude may be like many hurricane/tornado chasers. I chase after the experience, but “sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.”

‘Ooh’ said Susan. ‘I’d thought he was a man.

Is he quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion…’

‘Safe?’ said Mr Beaver … ’Who said anything about safe?

‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good.

He’s the King, I tell you.’

IF I COULD ONLY ASK ONE THING

The genie offered only three wishes. The Wonderful Jesus encourages us to ask, and ask big, endlessly! But what if you could ask only one thing of our magnificent Father? Think it over. What would it be?

Solomon made it wisdom. Some of us might say, “Wish I had thought of that.” But what is your one request?

For me, the ultimate request realized is beholding the face of Jesus! I desire to see Him as He really is, and not just as I have imagined Him! This desire is put in other words.

For Moses it was, “Show me Your glory!”

For Elisha it was a double potion of Elijah’s experience with God

For David it was to dwell in God’s house, to see His beauty and relish the reflections.

Paul’s quest and request was to fully and intimately know Jesus Christ

The Doctor may know things about my wife Pam I don’t, such as her blood pressure, heart rate and blood chemistry. But I know Pam in far deeper ways!

I know about Jesus from studying the bible, but oh, to know Him person to person, face to face! Having information about Jesus is not nearly as satisfying as having relationship with Him! Information about Jesus is like embracing shadows. Having Jesus experientially is desire realized, a tree of life!

The right now, senses-vibrantly-awake, touch-hear-see companionship of Jesus satisfies every other need! When we have lucid, fully awake companionship with Him we possess all things! He comes with everything else we might ask for: wisdom, comfort, belonging, material provisions, guidance, friendship, and power – meeting our needs and desires.

You make known to me the path of life;

you will fill me with joy in your presence,

with eternal pleasures at your right hand.   (Ps 16:11)

Seeing Jesus’ face at his return is the climax of the Bride’s desire.

But even at this instant He offers, “Seek My face.”  (Ps 27:8)

It tops the prayer list.

ADDING DANCE: A NUTRITIONAL SUPPLIMENT FOR JOY!

This morning I found and listened to a song by Ron Kenoly; “I will Dance.” I played it – swinging, swaying and stretching to the joyful music! It took me back 25 years when Anna and Claire were little. I took one in either arm and swung and spun with them getting us dizzy in the living room. What delightful moments!

I’m thinking many of us are lacking vitamin “D,” for Dance. Kenoly introduces the song by saying laughter and singing are signs of joy. And a third expression of joy is dancing! If we each took a lab test to discover our joy levels what would we find? Malnutrition or abundance?  Perhaps medicinal doses of laughter, singing, AND DANCING are just what the Doctor orders.

It’s important to have good theology. But if we are missing joy perhaps our theology is defective at the most elementary level. With all the exhortations in Scripture to rejoice in the LORD perhaps one of our greatest doctrinal errors is joylessness. Some dour souls warn too much joy may reach toxic levels. If joy can reach dangerous levels I suggest we stay just under the redline!

May Dance be added to your day along with Gui-Dance and Abun-Dance and Ascen-Dance!

     “In the morning I arise

     And lift up my eyes

And behold I will dance!”  Ron Kenoly

ENCOURAGEMENT: DELIVERING THE GOODS

ENCOURAGEMENT: DELIVERING THE GOODS

You may remember a scene from The Music Man where the community is hopeful, expectant and eagerly waiting for the Wells Fargo Wagon. What a fun song full of anticipation and energy!

People get excited over special deliveries.

Flowers! Chocolates! Toys! Tools! Games! Furniture!

The delivery guy may not get much attention, but typically there is a passing moment, a pleased, “Thank you!”

Delivery people are not in the business for acclaim and fanfare. But it feels good to know, even for an instant, that we are brightening someone’s day and doing something meaningful with our deliveries. You may make someone’s day, or even influence the course of their entire lives, by simply delivering one expression of encouragement.

ALL OF US ARE CALLED TO BE ENCOURAGERS

True prophets, pastors and teachers are encouragers.

Whatever your business, encouragement is vital.

Individuals, families and churches thrive when you sprinkle on encouragement.

VW came out with a diesel car that gets 78 MPG. But a simple expression of encouragement will carry someone 100,000 miles! Talk about fuel potency! Just a little dose of courage will inspire many to achieve things they never would otherwise. Do you want to influence people for good? Then be an encourager!

JESUS DELIVERS THE GOODS!

Jesus says, “Your name is Simon, but I’m going to call you Rocky!”

How’s that for instilling courage!

The widow lost her only son.

“Don’t cry”, says Jesus.

He touches the coffin and says,

“Young man, I say to you, get up!” (Luke 7:13-15)

That’s comfort and courage off the Richter scale!

Jesus assures, “In the world you have tribulation, but take courage;  I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 Goodness knows, Jesus delivers the goods! Jesus never promised us a life without problems! That’s why encouraging others is non-optional. Jesus encourages us to:

Not give up in prayer

Not worry about stuff, but seek the Kingdom

Be courageous when we don’t feel like it

Forgive 70 times 7 times

Take up our crosses and let our lights shine!

Build our houses on a good foundations

Rejoice when persecuted

When Jesus conveys His Father’s special delivery packages the result is faith, courage, and break-through! May we, like our Master, be encouragement agents delivering the goods!

Holiness: My Most Intense Encounter with God

Like many of you, I’ve been privileged to have experiences with God, in Christ. Some of those experiences have come as I have earnestly sought him. Other experiences have totally blind-sighted me with surprise. He has been The Pearl of Great Value I have sought for, as well as the Hidden Treasure I have stumbled upon!

God has spoken to me through dreams and visions and prophecy. Like many I have experienced His unspeakable joy. I have felt His comforting peace. I have felt exhilarating love! Sometimes there are simply no words to describe these moments.

My most intense, literally take-your-breath-away experience, was with the holiness of God. We had sponsored a youth conference at a local college. The presence of God was palpable! Many were overcome by the sense of His glory. There was a small circle of people on the floor praying for an individual. Someone waved to me to come over and join their prayer. As I got close I saw one of our daughters, laying on her back with four people on the floor praying for her.

Intense and amazing prophecies were spoken over her. As we continued to pray a forceful pressure came over us. Several of us found our heads shaking wildly side to side. Together we began to speak out, groan out, a great “Aaaaawwwww!!!” My breath expelled as we exclaimed together. It felt very much as if a strong man had put his hand on my chest and back and then pressed until there was not a drop of air left. But still, there was a silent “Aaawww!” coming out without air.

The experience left us washed out and spacey. We were in awe, almost unable to speak. This was not an experience of peace,  joy, or love. It was holiness! The intensity immobilized us on the floor. It was a pressure, a fear, a largeness, a power beyond description.

I have thought many times over the past three decades about those moments. If the experience could had been put into a bottle, and anyone had tasted a drop of it, they would certainly be overwhelmed with the fear of the Lord! No one on earth could withstand such an encounter without reverencing God.

In the Scriptures we find others who tasted the holy glory of God in similar ways. Moses said, “I am full of fear and trembling.” Priests were not able to minister because of the glory of God. Isaiah, Ezekiel and Daniel were overcome! John in revelation fell as a dead man. Through church history many have testified to the intense, bowl-you-over, immobilizing holiness of God.

The closest thing I can compare our experience to is a scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, as the Ark was opened at the end of the movie. Remember?

I often pray for the awareness of the holiness of God, and the great, pressing fear of the Lord it inspires. May He capture us and overwhelm our nations with His holiness! Please pray for the sensibility of Father God’s holiness to convict and set straight our neighborhoods and the world!

Three Lost Things Recovered

THE TAPE MEASURE

We moved from one house to another and in the process I lost my brand new, 25 foot, Stanley tape measure. The new house was a fixer-upper. I really needed that tape! I looked high and low to find it, praying all along, “Lord, help me find my tape measure!”

I worked with a flimsy 10 foot measure, and kept praying.

After several weeks of looking, and praying, I dreamed I found the tape measure. I went to my office the next morning and there, in the middle of the desk, it sat! My secretary had no idea how it got there.

SUNGLASSES

When I was a junior in High School my parents bought me some wire rim prescription sunglasses. I used them about 25 years, and then lost them! I interrogated every family member. I looked everywhere,  many times. You never know – the seventh time you look in the glove box, they might be there. I prayed many times over several weeks for their recovery.

One Sunday morning I was about to leave for church. I thought, “I’m going to jump into the car and drive straight into the rising sun without my glasses.”

I got down on my knees by my bed and prayed, again, “Lord, you know how I need those glasses. I’ve had them a long time. They’re valuable to me. They help me see. Please restore my glasses to me!”

I went out the car and opened the door. There on the seat in plain sight were the sunglasses! I ran back into the house and asked my wife, “Pam, did you find my sunglasses?” She replied, “No, but last night I dreamed you found them.” No one in the family knew how they got there.

THE WALLET

Image result for old black wallet

I lost my wallet. Searching pockets in the closet, cleaning out the car, and even calling the business where I last remember having it, brought no results. I canceled the cards, ordered a new driver’s license, and prayed often.

A couple weeks after the loss I was getting up from bed and sensed that something fell right beside my foot. I bent down and picked up my wallet! Where it fell from, I have no idea.

In each story we are unaware of any human element in bringing back the lost item. I seriously believe the angels of God were at work! The three recovered items in my stories are parables.

The Lord would restore:

Proportion and proper fit

Ability to see dazzling things

Image result for old black wallet   Identity and wealth

seek and you will find;
